7 Spiritual Laws for Getting What You Want Out of Life
I vividly remember the feeling of overwhelming confusion when, many years ago, I was asked what appeared to be a seemingly straightforward question: “What do YOU want?"
"What do YOU want? What do YOU want out of life? Where do YOU see your life going?"
I was stunned into silence. I had never thought about this before. The person I was talking to was highly amused: “Is it any wonder you feel stuck? You don’t get anywhere in life if you don’t know where you are going … YOU have to tell life what YOU want for life to deliver it to you.”
This was a total revelation to me. Up until that point I was under the misguided illusion that life happened to me. I couldn’t imagine that I could possibly happen to life. Yes, some things certainly are, and will always be, outside my conscious control but I realised that day that there is much more within my control than I had previously thought.
That deceptively simple question did wonders for my personal development.
It forced me to think about what I really wanted out of life.
It made me take a good look at my personal priorities.
It made me take full responsibility for my life.
It prompted me to recognise the personal power I hold.
It encouraged me to read and learn about how to utilise this power and make things happen.
It forced me to acknowledge, own and work through a range of internal issues.
And, it permanently moved me from a place of disempowerment to a place of empowerment.
Since this conversation took place I have discovered that the universe we live in is not a random, haphazard place. It is a highly organised entity and there are certain underlying rules by which it operates. These spiritual laws, as Diana Cooper calls them, all play out simultaneously. I realised that in order to get what I wanted out of life I needed to simply align myself with these rules.
Here are the seven spiritual laws that relate specifically to making things happen in life.
1. The Law of Clarity
Clarity is absolutely essential to getting what you want.
You have to be very clear in your own mind about what you would like in order to get it. Sending out confused, contradictory or ambiguous messages to the Universe will simply result in a muddled response, and you’ll be left wondering why your life is a mess and why those things that you don’t want keep appearing.
Lack of clarity consumes a lot of energy and keeps people in a state of perpetual confusion. But, when a clear decision is made about something it frees up a person to move forward and new opportunities start to appear.
Warning: This law is likely to trigger a huge fear response. “I don’t know what I want.”…“What if I make the wrong choice?”…“What if I should be doing the opposite?” Your initial responses to the question of what you really want will clearly highlight the exact issues that are currently getting in the way of you achieving your desires. Acknowledging and working through these fears and anxieties is a great place to start the journey to empowerment.
2. The Law of Request
The Universe is a helpful, friendly, accommodating place waiting to assist you every step of the way. All you have to do is ask, clearly.
Send a clear message to the Universe: “This is what I want.” Say it out loud, write it down, draw it. If you don’t ask, you don’t get.
Warning: Asking for help takes great humility and courage. This law is likely to highlight issues related to the ego. Many people find it hard to ask for help from anyone in life, let alone the Universe. They are happy to struggle along pretending to themselves and others that everything is ‘ok’ when in actual fact things are not ‘ok’. Working through the issues triggered by this law can help move a person to a place of greater clarity, humility and peace.
3. The Law of Reflection
The Universe rearranges itself to bring you what you believe.
It reflects your own belief system back to you in every area of your life. Therefore, if you believe you are worthy of achievement, abundance and success, you will get it. If you want these things but deep down you don’t believe you deserve them, or you are not good enough for them, then you won’t get them. Your belief system sets the energetic tone that will attract or repel what your mind wants.
You will get what you believe you deserve. Successful, fulfilled people always believe in themselves, love themselves, and have a high sense of self-worth.
Warning: This law will highlight issues around self-worth and self-esteem, prompting the need for work on one’s sense of self.
4. The Law of Resistance
What you resist persists in your life.
It is important to fully embrace what you do want, and not spend your time focusing on what you don’t want. The easiest way to never get what you want is by spending time complaining about what you don’t have.
Focusing on the positives in life, and consciously diverting your attention away from the negatives, is the easiest way to succeed. Think about people you know who always get what they want. They tend to be positive, optimistic people who take a ‘cup-half-full’ approach to life.
Warning: Working with this law will highlight issues around negative thinking patterns. Mindfully watching your thoughts; refraining from complaining, criticising and blaming; and, instead, focusing on the good in your life will help to eliminate the negative effect of this law.
5. The Law of Attention
Constantly focus on what you do want and you will get it.
Thinking about what you desire, and going that one step further to imagine how you will feel when you have fulfilled your desire is the quickest and easiest way to draw it to you. The more passion and energy you can muster up, the quicker it will manifest.
Warning: This law will highlight just how passionate you really are about the things you want in your life. Your energetic response to each of your desires will allow you to clearly separate out those things you want because you really want them, and the things you want because society in general, or the people around you have made you think you want them. This law aids internal clarity.
6. The Law of Affirmation
You become who you constantly affirm you are.
Positive affirmations (or statements said with confidence about a perceived truth) can be seen as the modern-day equivalent to ancient mantras in terms of their transformative power. Research suggests that every thought and emotion creates a chemical reaction and immediately changes the neurochemicals that affect our mental, physical and spiritual health. Therefore, by affirming short, positive statements to yourself again and again you are able to programme the mind into believing the stated concept. The mind cannot differentiate between what is real or fantasy. It simply believes what it is repeatedly told. For most people, the script that is being played consciously and unconsciously in their minds is a negative one. Reciting positive affirmations directly challenges this and raises a person’s energy vibration.
7. The Law of Attraction
You are a magnet: you attract like energy to yourself.
We all unconsciously transmit energy, and the energy vibration of our inner world attracts people, situations and things into our outer world. Therefore, everything in your life is there because you have drawn it to you at some unconscious level.
This law works on many different levels of a person’s physical, mental, emotional and spiritual being. As a simple example, if you think negative thoughts you will attract negative situations and people to you. If you want a project to succeed but you have underlying fears about it doing well, this energy will counteract the success of the project.
Warning: If life is persistently not good, then this law can be difficult for your ego to accept! James Allen articulated this law in his statement: "Circumstances do not make the man, they reveal him." The quality of your life and the people in it are a stark reflection of the energy vibration you are generally emitting. If you want things to be different, then work on yourself and raise your vibration. All forms of personal development - kind, loving, peaceful states of being, service, prayer and meditation are ways to raise your energy vibration. As your inner world starts to change, your outer world will have to change too.
These spiritual laws are exact; they operate in everyone’s lives. Knowing about them makes it easier to play the game. Yes, there are things in your life that you have little, if any, conscious control over because they come from the deeper realms of your being. But, there are plenty of things you can change to make your life easier and more fulfilling.
As you consciously align yourself with these laws a manifesting power will start to appear in your life as never before.
The Universe will conspire with you to make your dreams and wishes come true.
